Jacksonville, FL (December 21, 2017) Wawa, an innovative convenience store chain that is a leader in the trend of mini-market gas stations preparing freshly made sandwiches, held its grand opening ceremonies for its 4866 Gate Parkway location. This is location number 3 in Jacksonville but one of 8 locations the chain will open in our area during a first wave of construction. Plans are to open a total of 25 Jacksonville locations.
District 11 Council Member Danny Becton was on hand to participate in the ceremonies along with District 4 Council member Scott Wilson where the store resides. This store is one of 720 located in six states. In November, Wawa announced plans to open 25 to 30 stores throughout Florida over the next several years.
The Pennsylvania-based chain reinvented the convenience store with its food preparation kiosks, where customers create their individualized sandwiches choosing the kind of bread, meat and toppings they prefer. Wawa also introduced surcharge-free ATMs. The store has a cult like following with such brand loyalty that couples have even been married and held wedding receptions at their WaWa store. Some even sport Wawa logo tattoos.
Part of that loyalty comes from its business plan that offers some of the best benefits in the industry including employee stock ownership, a 401 (K) retirement plan, medical coverage (including dental and vision), education expense assistance, and paid leave.
Last year, Wawa was a popular answer to a Times-Union poll that asked what stores Jacksonville needed.
