Jacksonville, FL (December 1, 2019) — There are a few recently appointed faces on the Board of Council of Elder Affairs, one of which is our new District 11 Representative, Gezil Andrews. The seat was previously filled by COEA’s 2018-19 Chair, Carol D’Onofrio, for two terms before passing the baton to Andrews. Upon her arrival on the council, Andrews was selected to be COEA’s 2019-2020 Vice Chair.
Andrews will be using her experience on COEA to contribute to the District 11’s Quarterly Newsletter to provide relative information and announcements not only to seniors, but residents of ages. Andrews has been active in servant leadership for most of her 32-year professional career. Our District 11 office is confident her skills will serve the district and our elderly population well.
COEA is the countywide body established by the City of Jacksonville Ordinance Code Chapter 82.101-108. COEA is a valued voice to the Mayor and City Council to oversee services, manage programs and to help make policies that provide self-sufficiency and personal independence for the elderly of Jacksonville-Duval County. There are nineteen members on COEA, five of which are appointed by the mayor and 14 are appointed by each of their district City Council Members. They all serve as on an autonomous volunteer basis to provide a consistent source of knowledge, experience and findings to move through the City’s departments and commissions.
There are 14 active Council appointments and 5 vacant seats on COEA. Members must be at least 55 years old and cannot be employed by any government entity or a provider of services to the elderly. If you or someone you know has an interest in possibly serving on this Council, please contact our office and we will get you connected.
Andrews was already very much engaged in her own community, Sweetwater by Del Webb, and hit the ground running, interacting with many different organizations and constituents throughout our area, after City Council approved and finalized her appointment on September 24th, 2019.
Andrews has been out in our community talking to seniors at our Community Centers, the Senior Expo, Love a Senior Day, the Holiday Dance for Seniors, the Luminary Awards, the Program Advisory Board for Jacksonville Senior Centers and connecting with other organizations in the realm of elder services such as Elder Source and Senior Services for the City of Jacksonville. Andrews will be working alongside our office at our Town Hall Meetings and other events to come. Please come and meet her and hear of the work that is being done in and around our community!
The Council On Elder Affairs meets monthly on the fourth Wednesday at 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at City Hall, 117 W. Duval St. 32202, 1st Floor, Lynwood Roberts Conference Room. Please contact the office prior to the day of the meeting to confirm time and location as changes can occur from time to time.
